Kanye West & Elon Musk Are Handing Donald Trump the White House

As Donald Trump fans the flames of civil unrest and ignores the worsening public health crisis facing the U.S., it seems only fitting that Kim Kardashian’s bizarre husband Kanye West run for president against him.

With just a few months to go before the November election, West announced that he would run for president against Mr. Trump and his Democrat opponent Joe Biden. Hours later, Tesla CEO Elon Musk came out in support of West’s candidacy.

Kanye West, a rapper who married into reality TV’s royal family, seems a fitting opponent to Donald Trump. Eccentric billionaire Elon Musk, for that matter, would make the perfect running mate. But West’s entrance into the political arena isn’t a challenge to Trump’s leadership. It’s the exact opposite. West is simply there to help the president win a second term.

Kanye West Isn’t the Next President

Entering into the presidential race this late in the game comes with some severe penalties. Namely, West can’t run as an independent in several U.S. states. That means voters in Indiana, Maine, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, and Texas will have to write-in Mr. West’s name. In the rest of the country, Kanye can only get on the ballot if he’s able to collect enough signatures over the next month.

In short, Kanye West can’t win the election. But he can help Donald Trump win. West’s entry into the race is the hail-mary pass Trump needs even to have a shot at winning. That’s a fact that surely can’t have escaped West as he announced his candidacy on Twitter.

Trump and West have an unusual relationship—the rapper has often expressed support for Mr. Trump and his policies. He has visited the White House and even reportedly discussed a potential political role with the president. It raises the question of whether West’s candidacy is a trade-off for a position with the Trump Administration in 2020.

If Kanye’s announcement is to be taken seriously, his entry would likely steal votes from Biden, not Trump. Joe Biden has struggled to capture the attention of minorities and young people, two demographics that West would presumably play-well to. Plus, West offers another option to voters who have grown tired of establishment candidates like Biden.

Kanye West’s Bid is a Trump Endorsement

Even if Kanye West was just rambling on Twitter, his remarks add momentum to Trump’s campaign. By announcing his own intention to run, West is signaling his disapproval of the current choices.

Musk’s support of Kanye sends a similar message. That matters because his audience is markedly different from Trump’s, but very closely aligned with Biden. It hurts Biden far more than it hurts Trump.

If nothing else, it adds chaos to the election, and that’s something Donald Trump needs. During the 2016 campaign, Trump’s tactics always centered on diversion and theatrics. The same is true this year.

Mr. Trump has spent the majority of his campaign painting the picture of a battle between good and evil. The more circus-like the election gets, the better Donald Trump looks.

Joe Biden, a politician through-and-through, has almost no experience with these kinds of theatrics. He’ll get very little exposure from Kanye’s tweet, and what he does get will be mostly unflattering.
